22. Sobek (Sobk, Suchos, Sebek)
Sobek the crockodile God is known as a creator god, who emerges from the waters of chaos to lay his eggs of life on the banks of the Nile. In the Book of the Dead he helped in the rebirth of Heru, and assisted the dead, by giving them sight, and by opening the doors to heaven, leading them along the treacherous paths of the netherworld.
The simulacrum of Sobek at Deir el Bahari is made up of three small out crop stones that sits upon the rubble of a slope, to the left when approaching Hatshepsut's temple. He sits just above a depression of muddy shale that would hold a small pond of water during the rainy season. To see him one must be behind him standing within the temple. The three stones that comprise his body come together from this perspective to form the crocodile God Sobek.
