Lady of heaven, queen of earth, mistress of the underworld. Ma'at is the personification of truth, balance, cosmic order and measure. In the Judgement hall of the Duat Ma'at presides over the weighing of the heart as justice in a divine state where the souls of the dead made their confessions. Her crown (the feather of truth) is placed on the scales of justice and balanced against the heart of the deceased. She is straight forward mediation at the center of the balance and ironically not a judge at all. She personifies activation as every action has a reaction, every cause an effect. According to the legend she is not born of any god but Ma'at was in the boat of Ra when the sun god sailed for the first time. A journey across the sky that is defined and measured by Ma'at. Ma'at rules everything cosmic; time, seasons, the setting and rising of the sun. She is the daughter and eye of Ra.
Steadily upward throughout the ages, growing,
expanding into yet another flame,
lighting the darkness with yet greater power,
quenched yet unquenched by the veil of the night.
So grows the soul of man ever upward,
quenched yet unquenched by the darkness of night.
