11. Double Khepri

Just south of Deir el Bahari a second cove in the cliffs reveal two side-by-side images of Khepri the dung beetle with wings that open and swing up over the heads.  Interestingly the word Khepri means “to make, make from, or become.”  These terms express the relationship the dung beetles have to the morning sun, and given the same self-creating abilities to Khepri as simulacra.  Khepri’s appearance in simulacra coincides with the appearance of the sun on the horizon, as both the sun and Khepri as a simulacra transform throughout the cycle of the day.
